A lot of folks out and about along the C&O Canal Trail today, including a heron, a bunch of ducks, sun-loving turtles, and big and small snails.
My son noticed this fallen tree, festooned with fungus. We looked closer and saw these beetles and larvae munching away. After some research, we discovered that they’re four-spotted fungus beetles, in the family of pleasing fungus beetles and species ischyrus quadripunctatus.
Along the trail, we spotted a log completely covered in fungus. The colors and patterns of the fungus were mesmerizing on closer look.
