Normally, the cruellest part about Sturgis is that a lot of people in Black Hills tourism loathe the fucking thing. Their numbers crash (and don't bounce back) because no one else wants to be anywhere near western South Dakota. Itânot Labor Dayâeffectually closes the season.
I know business owners who've run the numbers. The conclusion: outside of the immediate area, Sturgis is unquestionably toxic. Locals would almost certainly be better off without the massive interruption in August.
This makes Sturgis the perfect conservative event, however. It's a big, trashy horror show that most people loathe but everyone defers to because the people who love it have unparalleled talent at issuing threats.
And none of the promised economic benefits materialize. It's all just exhaustion, thankless labor, debt, wasted government budgets that could've done more good elsewhere, and torture by Lee Greenwood songs.
All for the joy of cleaning up lite beer barf, blood and Viagra-spiked jizz off of piles of Confederate flags.
I can't think of a more perfect Republican cultural celebration.
