If we look at the management of the pandemic in Jamaica and are being honest, we did fairly well compared to several countries--some with way more resources than us. There were weaknesses, lots and lots of weaknesses but I don't think PR was the issue as many of you claim.
I've seen more complaints about PR during the pandemic from some folks than actual discussion about critical issues that needed greater attention.
Let's look at schools, for example. This was a big issue. Lots of uncertainty. Lots of students being let behind and we seemingly still do not have a solution to dealing with that adequately if we should have to keep schools closed. How did PATH students fare in all of this?
The police were operating for some time without PPE. Some got stuff but some didn't though they were expected to be out there serving and protecting, managing corridors and SOE checkpoints, etc. This was barely a discussion. Mentioned here and there.
Lots of workers were significantly affected. Pay cuts, layoffs, etc. I don't recall some of those same people talking about this really. Hardly a discussion about the policy and legislative changes that we desperately need to improve labour laws.
Commendably, some people were given cash disbursements but many others were not. In what way did the state attempt to take care of those citizens? What could have been done?
We had (or still have) huge problems with PPE for healthcare workers. We talked about doctors (and nurses to some extent) but not the others working in these facilities, especially those on the frontline who are first point of contact.
We were get informed. There were weaknesses, of course. I feel PR is important and that we can actually critique what happened and didn't happened without pretending that was THE problem in all of this. Talk about the damn issues man. Ugh.
