Wonderful rant against hydrogen by a US House candidate who clearly knows where his towel is. Just want to defend hydrogen for seasonal storage if you are far away from the equator (like my country the Netherlands) and high temperature industrial processes. https://twitter.com/SeanCasten/status/1291443249228517376
Melting steel with hydrogen is now a thing and I think with good reason: you lose 20% of energy when you convert electricity to hydrogen but you don't lose anything if you convert it back into heat.
For 100% renewable systems you can buffer daily fluctuation relatively easy with demand-response, smart charging electric vehicles, stationary batteries, hydro and some other storage technologies. But they are all unsuited to cover long periods of shortage.
If you live far away from the equator like the people in the Canada, the UK, Germany and the Netherlands, this is a big problem. Producing hydrogen and storing it in e.g. salt caverns is one of the best options. So I think it's a bit more nuanced. Apart from that: great thread.
