Many of you know by now that earthquakes in the east are felt more widely than comparable quakes in the west, due mostly to differences in how waves propagate in the two regions 1/
The map at left illustrates how stark the difference can be, showing "Did You Feel It?" intensities for M5.8-6 quakes in California, Utah, and Virginia 2/
The map at right compares DYFI intensities for today's #ncearthquake with those from a 2014 M5.1 quake in California 3/
It appears that shaking from the #ncearthquake wasn't as strong or widely felt as a typical M5.1 in the east. One of the questions seismologists are still working on is why some earthquakes pack a stronger punch, in terms of shaking, than others 4/
But even as a relatively wimpy M5.1 in the east, shaking from today's quake was still more widely felt than was shaking from the 2014 Brea earthquake 5/5
