There are huge elements of sadism and masochism in white evangelical subculture, as in authoritarian groups and abusive communities in general. See the work of @johnastoehr for insight into these dynamics in particular.

PS. @elizabethjdias, please do a piece on ex-evangelicals. You've really done a great job of looking evangelical racism in the face here. We've been trying to expose it for a long time with little to no recognition, but we know what we're talking about and are worth talking to.
