The Difference Between Corporate Work & Competitive Sports, and Why Many Struggle Transitioning (Thread):

We were told the real world would be like sports. Survival of the fittest

Sounds great to a competitive athlete

Except it's BS
In sports, the best 5, 6, 9 or 11 guys are typically on the field, and so long as their performance justifies it, they stay on the field

Metrics are fairly black and white

And because demand for talent is high, coaches, fans, and teammates put up with "aggressive" personalities
They don't realize it at the time, but athletes are PROTECTED by team-size limits

In the working world, instead of paying one Lebron James $35 Million, the employer would figure out how to pay 100 6 ft tall players $10

Because companies cannot have "too many men on the court"
Could Lebron James beat 100 average players in a game of 1 on 100?

Probably not

And he doesn't have to worry about that, because the NBA is 5 on 5

But regular companies will ALWAYS try to find the cheapest way to employ productive labor
So rather than employing expensive superstars, companies find it cheaper to divide the work up into smaller parcels that many people can do more cheaply

And when many people can do something, their individual negotiating power drops

Which is exactly the point
Corporations don't want employees to have any negotiating power, even with how they act

The entire nature of your job has been built to maximize YOUR REPLACEABILITY

The roles are standardized, such that out-performance is rare

And if you can't outperform, you can't be you
Which means the people who survive in this environment are typically not competitive enough to survive in a ring, octagon, field, or court

Because if they were, they'd have quit out of frustration

But they will be held up by management to be "superstars"
Not because they are the smartest or the best

But because they offer the highest profit margins to the company

You are literally led to believe that your ability is the same as your exploitability

And if you're competitive, this can be a mind fuck
