Took a walk across Brean Down this afternoon, and visited the fort located at its westerly tip. It was originally built in the 1860s (one of Palmerston’s Forts) and served as a sea defence against perceived French threat until 1901. #History #walking #Somerset #BreanDown #NT
It was recommissioned as a coastal battery in 1940, during #SWW, with 2 gun positions built to house old #FWW naval 6” guns, as well as 2 searchlights. It fell under operations of 571st Coast Regt, RA. #SWW #WW2
It was also used to trial weapons, the most famous being the seaborne ‘Bouncing Bomb’. The short launch rails used in the trials are still in evidence. #WW2 #SWW #BreanDown #History
