part of the issue with the eva community is a lot of the people in it definitely like the show not for its actual story but for the fact that it's widely revered as "complex" & "hard to understand" & they feel a sense of superiority from being able to tell people they grasp it
a lot of people act like discussing eva is the only way to enjoy the show but it's clear they don't actually even care about discussion. the truth is that no one has a right answer in eva. Everyone fucking sucks in it. Everyone is fucking terrible. That's the entire point of eoe.
But if they admit that, then they have to admit to people that they—for sure—do not understand eva because there is nothing to entirely get. And those kinds of people would never give up that type of notoriety re: being able to brag about knowing what the show means.

For the record, you are allowed to enjoy characters in eva and you are also allowed to enjoy the show without having to partake in ~discourse~ about it. It's so bizarre that post-watching discussion is almost required by the community. I just like the show dude. I don't care.
You don't have to defend yourself for liking Shinji. Relating to complex and traumatized characters who do really bad things is the entire point of the show. It's the entire reason we feel so connected to it, and it's the entire reason we still talk about it.
