#OnThisDay 75 yrs ago,Nagasaki became the 2nd city to be destroyed by a nuclear weapon. And since even their government took almost an entire day to realise that Hiroshima had been destroyed by an atomic bomb, ordinary people in Nagasaki didn't have any faintest idea abt the same
The research project undertaken to dev. the1st NuclearBombs was codenamed 'The Manhattan Project' It was such a secret op. that most people(who btw, didn't know each other due to their false IDs)didn't exactly know the full scale of the project which was limited only to a handful!
Robert Oppenheimer, the lead scientist of the project recalled that he thought of the following verses of Bhagawad Gita when he witnessed the explosion for the 1st time(in a test detonation)
दिवि सूर्यसहस्रस्य भवेद्युगपदुत्थिता।
यदि भाः सदृशी सा स्याद्भासस्तस्य महात्मनः।।॥११–१२॥
The names of the two bombs-'Fat Man' & 'Little Boy' were based on their dimensions & taking a little inspiration from certain characters of the 1941 Mystery-Noir "The Maltese Falcon"

In an effort to warn the civilians to evacuate & force their leaders to surrender,US dropped thousands of leaflets, rumoured to be written by Japanese POWs on major Japanese cities prior to the bombing. But these never mentioned abt the Atomic Bomb/site of explosion
#Hiroshima75
The exact location where the atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima was a hospital(now a clinic) named-'Shima Hospital'. Atleast 80 people, including patients & Medical staff present there on Aug 6,were instantaneously burned to death

Despite the scale of explosion, nearly 650000 people of both cities did infact survive the explosion. The term 'hibakusha' is used for the survivors of the bombings. As astonishing it may sound close to 200 survived both of them! But only 1 is acknowledged by Govt.

Tsutomu Yamaguchi, who was in Hiroshima for a meeting on Aug 6 returned to his hometown of Nagasaki the next day & despite injuries went to work on Aug 9 & while describing his near death experience to his supervisor, explosion occurred & miraculously he survived again(till 2010)
While there's a never ending debate on whether nuclear weapons should be in use or not, a Peace flame near Hiroshima has burned continuously since 1964, and will remain lit until all nuclear bombs on the planet are gone. #Obama became the 1st sitting US Prez to visit that place.
Sci-Fi writer H.G. Wells through his 1914 novel 'The World Set Free' is said to have coined the term 'Atomic Bomb'. The novel was based on prediction of "a more destructive and uncontrollable sort of weapon than the world had yet seen",which is turn inspired its actual creation.
And Godzilla is thought to have been inspired from the Hiroshima & Nagasaki bombings. A reptile mutated due to radiation caused by nuclear experiments & having the potential to wreak havoc to the same extent as of an Atomic bomb,it was considered as a metaphor of atomic bombs
Nobel laureate & the brilliant Richard Feynman was one of the scientists involved in the Manhattan Project. It's said that he was the only person to see the test detonation thr his naked eyes. He was supposed to travel to Hiroshima to ensure that nothing goes wrong

But the enormous success of the test didn't require him to do so.He was later deeply disturbed by the mass bloodshed he had enabled. Coupled with his beloved wife's death(whom he used to write coded letters when he was at the project) at around the same time, led him to depression
