A thread on Chelsea before Roman Abramovic :
Our highest recorded attendance is 82,905 in 1935 against Arsenal, where the game finished 1-1.
This shows the high popularity of Chelsea football club before Abramovic, which people think we didn’t have.
We went through some rough times in the 70’s and 80’s due to financial reasons meaning we had to sell our best players.
A change of fortune happened in 1993 when Glenn Hoddle became a player manager. This is where we started to make cup semi finals and finals whilst also starting to play European football again.
When Gullit arrived this is where we started to win trophies.
In 1997 we won the FA Cup by beating Middlesbrough 2-0 thanks to goals from Di Matteo and Newton.
We then won the FA Cup in 2000 by beating Aston Villa 1-0.
In 1999/2000 we reached the Champions Legaue Quarter Final where we lost to Barcalona in extra time 6-4
We were a top 6 side for 7 consecutive seasons before the Abramovic takeover. We were a popular club before him and not all our success came after him.
