My latest is up now on @19thnews. I got an earful yesterday from the Black women who tell me that for them, a Black woman VP on the Democratic ticket is not a maybe -- it's a must. They say anything less is a rejection of their contributions to the party: https://19thnews.org/2020/08/black-women-insist-that-biden-write-us-into-history/
I talked to a dozen women on the record about this issue, which I have watched evolve over the course of the #veepstakes conversation. They are frustrated and fuming over the racial and gendered attacks that have emerged as Black women have been mentioned as leading candidates.
Back in March, I wrote about the activists who began calling for a woman of color, and a Black woman in particular, in the No. 2 slot after the path to the nomination closed for a woman during the primary: https://19thnews.org/2020/03/female-activists-set-their-sights-on-the-no-2-spot-they-want-a-woman-as-vice-president/
I've also written several stories on some of the women who are or were being considered to join Biden as his running mate, including Harris, Rice, Abrams, Warren and Klobuchar. We don't cover #veepstakes as a horse race, but in a way that hopefully helps inform voters.
I also recently wrote a story about Black women voters and why they say a Black woman VP matters. Simply put: They see it as a signal of respect, not just symbolism. https://19thnews.org/2020/07/black-female-voters-say-they-want-what-theyre-owed-power/
