The M5.1 #NorthCarolinaEarthquake was reported as being felt by almost 50,000 people (so far). This is common-earthquakes of similar magnitudes are felt more broadly on the east coast than the west coast. Why?

Seismic waves travel farther on the east coast because of the older, and often denser rocks. Additionally, rocks in the west coast are younger and more broken up so the seismic wave energy isn’t transmitted as well.
Check out these past earthquakes. The stars show the earthquake location and the dots are reports of people feeling the earthquake. Look how much more broadly earthquakes are felt in the central and eastern US than on the west coast. (Image from the USGS)
