/ The fate of sub-saharan Africa rests on Nigeria. It's the biggest and most influential country. If Nigeria is able to fix itself to become like Indonesia or Brazil, the rest of the continent will follow. Will it happen? The issue is not with the Govt, it's with the system.
/ Nigeria is extremely unproductive. Nobody is doing anything except feeding on the oil money. As the population has grown, the money has become less, so the currency has devalued, making the people actually poorer.
/ For all this time, the people who have gained wealth are the "talkers". Those who are best able to navigate the system to slice off a bigger chunk of that cake. There are very few builders, and there is no real culture of building.
/ The political system is setup that it has the ability to perpetuate itself - the current system works for those in power, so they are doing their utmost best to keep it that way. It is the source of their wealth. The young people aspire to join them.
/ So long the primary source of wealth comes from Govt sharing, people will not be productive and will not build. It is much harder to build and grow a farm, than it is to get a Govt contract from your cousin. And so long money comes from Govt, nobody wants to rock the boat.
/ The real way out is to a) Make it difficult for the money to flow to people from Government (extreme scrutiny) and b) Keep a weak currency so it makes sense to build locally c) Invest more in local production and innovation.
/ On top of that, the system where the vast majority of the vote is decided by rural voters that vote in exchange for a few dollars has to be fundamentally changed. Once these are in place, leadership will be replaced by a new leadership with ideology, and change will start.
/ Without that, the country will decline into a lazy apathy, and it will take the rest of sub-saharan Africa down with it. Business and politics need to be completely separated - so long they mix, there can be no progress.
/ Nigeria needs a new set of politicians who the people know are really there to Govern. Nobody trusts any of the existing ones. And all of young ones wearing traditional cap and promoting a party - we know you are trying to enrich yourself. Stop pretending, it fools nobody.
/ If you want money, go do business. If you care about your country or community and want it to be better, then go into politics.
