All along the banks of the #RoyalCanal

I took to my trusty steed to journey along the canal from Docklands to Castleknock. Makes for a fascinating insight into Dublin. From grotty neglected inner city to middle class suburbia.
#RoyalCanal The east end from Docklands to Phibsboro is a rather grim affair it must be said. The canal itself heavily littered at this point, particularly Croke Park to Newcommen Bridge. Still surprisingly well used with walkers.
From Phibsborough things pick up. A more naturalistic #RoyalCanal emerges. Lots of activity. What strikes you here is how underdeveloped the adjoining land is. Makes it quiet alright but perhaps more residential along the route would make it a more vital amenity
Cycling is more tolerated than encouraged along the route. Be prepared to dismount regularly for kissing gates and narrow sections of towpath.
#RoyalCanal Into Cabra. Past allotments and wildflowers and train yards. And then Ashtown. The new neighborhoods here front directly onto the canal. The numbers of people about increases.
The #RoyalCanal remains an impressive feat of engineering. The locks and bridges among some of the city’s best industrial heritage. The 20th C feats are also impressive as you pass over the M50.
And then, after all that, it’s only at Castleknock that you find canal boats moored in the #RoyalCanal. Which seems a shame. Again perhaps a more bought-in community in the city centre would revitalise the canal.

A great, if under utilised amenity for the city.
