An environmental disaster is taking place in Mauritius where an oil tanker has crashed and is leaking 4000 tonnes of oil into the reef. They have a national relief plan for 10 tonnes max.

The devastation this will wreak to an economy over-reliant on tourism and shattered by Covid lockdown is devastating to even contemplate. My mum is part of the effort to clean up the spill, she sent this, this is what swirls around the turtles, fishermen and marine life now.

Black gold. So that mega polluting industrialists can continue their death parade toward climate change, the Mauritian coast and economy is being destroyed. Mauritius is 16th of ALL countries most susceptible to the impacts of climate change, esp. cyclones and flash flooding.

Mauritius was underdeveloped by Britain & France, an exploited plantation economy left reliant on tourism (25% GDP) and offered independence only in becoming a tax haven for foreign business interests. Mauritians toil beneath corrupt governments and this broken economic model.

Now again, to facilitate the depraved conduct of foreign industrialists, the locals are caught up in this environmental catastrophe. Mourning and fighting. My mother weeps because the ocean is life to Mauritians, and that life is being smothered and destroyed.
