/ Hassan has noted a very important point about green land grabbing. Many people who are upset do not realize that these kinds of actions/resistance have a long long history. This is a microcosm to understand a long and contested history of forest/plantations.

/ This case is by no means is 'outlier' rather this is the norm. For many shocked environmentalists, this has happened in the Billion Tree Tsunami. This particular case documented in the video is the result of plantation on disputed land. Comments under the original video post.
/ Historically, the forest department has used plantations to way to encroaching especially the land that is disputed, be it between communities, be it between communities and state. Theoretically, plantations/forests are a method of instilling control over certain territories.
/ especially at the margins where the state's writ is weak. 2 most common ways for states to encroach into margin are development projects (infrastructure etc) and forests/plantations. In state narrative, these places are barren, not used, low productive use, waste, land etc.
/ Once it is established that land is wasted and can be put to better use. then, the state unleashes it developmental agenda which makes state 'visible' physically, legally, and all other aspects in other words state's presence can be felt through a road, bridge, trees etc
/ Similarly, a conservation/plantation project are used in similar way. In Pakistan we can see use of all three, however, PTI has taken conservation discourse to new heights. Billion Tree Tsunami, Clean Green Pakistan, the ban on plastic bags and many other plantation drives
/ are examples of PTI's conservationist discourse.
Cuz of a very strong international discourse on Climate Change, hence, locally all actions are legitimized in the name of CC. That is why we see videos, tweets, and appreciation being showered on PTI's env. actions. These intl.
/ In my own research, I have documented how the famous Billion Tree Tsunami was marginalizing communities.
