Sad reality for Belorussians is there is no *better* outcome from what's currently happening. Fact is the economy is entirely dependent on Russia, so any successor to Lukashenko won't be able to change much. That would require *tens of billions* which the west won't provide. https://twitter.com/GennadySimanovs/status/1292181814522589187
Belorussians live far better than Ukrainians, materially (GDP ppp p/c $21,224 vs $10,130). Any tilt to the west would lead to a catastrophic economic collapse & Kiev's experience tells us West isn't waiting with a 'Marshall plan.' Thus, choice is either Moscow or bust.
Russia itself can take or leave Lukashenko. If the opposition comes to power, it won't bother Moscow much (unless they commit economic suicide & try align with EU). "Democracy advocates" expressing "solidarity" with Belorussians clearly don't actually care about their welfare.
Such as British MP @stewartmcdonald, for instance. Would he be willing to support, let's say, a £40 billion aid package for Minsk, paid for by British taxpayers, in order to help make Belarus "democratic, prosperous and free?"
Excellent thread from @BalazsJarabik. For more context/understanding. https://twitter.com/BalazsJarabik/status/1292380105554223105?s=20
