Lots of talk/worry about schools opening in September but not much talk about how many school-age kids are already attending daycare centres that are open at full capacity. Teachers have a union looking out for them...
I wonder how things would look if ECE’s formed a union? #ece https://twitter.com/cbcnews/status/1292415327171678211
We have AECENL in NL, which is mainly an advocacy group, but childcare in NL is a mess and has been a mess for as long as I’ve been a certified ECE (15 years). The majority of people I see advocating for ECE’s these days are the parents.
But there is no unified voice for everyone that’s working in childcare in NL. Not every ECE is a member of AECENL and they have no real power to make changes anyway. At least groups like @PFACCNL are drawing attention to many of the problems facing families and ECE’s here.
I’m wondering who is consulted when government makes regulations regarding childcare. I know family childcare groups don’t have a say. Perhaps AECENL but their input seems limited. I’m assuming they ask a couple of private daycare administrators...
But many regulations seem to be made up by folks that have never been around young children. Especially new regulations that focus on Covid-19 procedures.
Lack of consultation with ECE’s and huge issues with subsidy applications/approvals/wait times/pay are my main problems with government right now. Perhaps @FureyAndrew will listen when so many before him have not. We shall see.
These are the things I’m thinking about on a Sunday morning while I’m on vacation. A self-employed family childcare provider never really stops working or worrying about families they care for (and all the families dealing with childcare issues).
Safe environments for all children and all educators, please and thank you!
