OTD 1915 at Hooge, nr Ypres Ralph Hawkesworth Legard. B. 29 July 1875 into a Yorkshire family with roots traced to 12th Century. Educated @Dunelmia 1887-89 and @DulwichCollege 1890-92. He played #Rugby for @Harlequins and @rosslynpark, proposed by his father.
Commissioned as 2/Lt into the 3/Durham Light Infantry (DLI) in 1906; promoted to Lieutenant 14 May,1907; 4th Bn Captain, March,1914. Went to France with the 2nd Bn Sept.1914, and was killed in action on the enemy's parapet at Hooge, 9 August,1915. Life for Ralph ended at 40.
Here is his plaque, or Death penny. His older brother George Shafto, a gifted athlete and sportsman, also served in the DLI, was badly wounded, later to die of those wounds in 1924 while Headmaster at Bow School, Durham.
