Semiconductors have been the engines driving innovation & the global economy - Every 5 yrs we come close to getting a semiconductor fab (latest was HSMC) but due to policy, investment, etc., it gets stalled. Tremendous benefits of having one IMO

1/n Economic impact
Every $1 invested in Semiconductor R&D has created $16 in GDP growth for US. India imports >$10B chips, & >$50B electronic hardware primarily due to the inability to source chips. The overall global chip sales is ~$0.5 T, and we contribute ~0%

2/n Tools & Materials
FABs need tools in Litho, CVD, PVD, ALD, Etching, SEM, etc., and advanced materials(photo masks, sputtering targets, slurries, wafers, etc.,). The tool & materials mkt is ~$50B & ~130B. A FAB would spur these mkts, & more importantly drive INNOVATION.

3/n Second order innovation
Semi tools' design & servicing, needs cutting edge research in fields like photonics, plasma, materials science, robotics, nanotech, etc., which would create a large multi disciplinary #deeptech talent pool. China bears testimony to these benefits.

4/n Cross-pollination of research
Research in the above fields would drive innovation in other industries → ALD can be used to coat pharma APIs, CVD can be used to make diamonds, Lasers & CVD can be used in Metal 3D printers, PVD can be used to coat medical implants, etc etc.,

5/n Geopolitical reasons
Taiwan's TSMC leads in advanced chips (<16 nm node) & China's SMIC in the rest. US's been stalling TSMC's supply to Chinese companies & China has been trying to secure chip volumes for their own consumption. There is an opportunity for India somewhere.

6/n Brain Drain
Leadership of most Semi companies are Indians and there's been a steady drain of great brains who've gone for higher studies in electronics/CS and have created great impact across industries. Examples: @vinoddham, @sundarpichai, @vkhosla, etc., #WhatIfTheyStayed
