On the eve of #WorldIndigenousPeoplesDay I would like to discuss how important it is for indigenous people to have representation & voice in national discourse.

Lack of representation makes the #IndigenousPeoples vulnerable to #CulturalAppropriation by opportunists. (1/n)
The North East region of India is home to approximately 92 #IndigenousCommunities

The tribal communities of NE are an ethnic minority. They are mostly from the Mongoloid stock, and their language is derived from the Tibeto-Burman language. (2/n)
#IndigenousPeoples of NE region make up the largest concentration of linguistic & ethnic minority community in a multi-cultural country like India.

Therefore it is baffling when the #Indigenous tribes of NE are denied their minority rights. (3/n)
The discourse on "minority" in India has been limited to religion by both sides of the debate. Even here the topix is about Hindu-Muslim.

The Animist religion of #Indigenous communities of NE are not showcased. Religions like Bathou, Donyi Polo, Sanamahi remain unheard. (4/n)
Ironically the attempts to suppress #IndigenousPeoples voices of NE comes from the leftist-liberals and leftist intellectuals.

Any endeavour by the #Indigenous tribes of NE to assert their voice is shouted down by allegations of "xenophobia" and "ethnonationalism". (5/n)
Now why would a group that prides itself as the so-called "voice of the oppressed" is intimidated by #IndigenousPeoples ?

Why are they trying to erode the right of #Indigenous communities to safeguard their identity from influx of illegal migrants? (6/n)
One possible explanation is that, in local context, these self appointed leftists are not what they clam to be. They don't understand #IndigenousHistory #IndigenousIdentity and thus seek to sweep facts under the carpet. (7/n)
The #IndigenousPeoples of NE are engaged to defend their ancestral lands from influx of illegal migrants.

On the occasion of #IndigenousDay it is important to ensure that the voice of the #Indigenous is neither suppressed nor appropriated. (8/8)
