After speaking about math on @ryanjespersen show I’ve been thinking a lot about the number of parents concerned about how children are learning math.
It is difficult to show how new pedagogy works over the phone, on the radio.....
#abed #ableg
I understand parents are frustrated.
But pls consider if you can’t physically demonstrate the difference between 3x8 and 8x3 (and in which situations one might be more important or valuable than another)
Or if you can’t explain WHY you “carry the one” or WHY you “borrow the one”-
If what you know about diving fractions is “Flip then multiply”-Then you didn’t fully achieve numeracy & what you want is for your kid is for them to be able to “DO MATH”
Not really KNOW MATH.
Which is like wanting your child to read a book but not caring that they didn’t understand the story.

And I think that’s a shame.

Think of all the beautiful stories they’re missing out on.
It’s the difference between reading & literacy.
“Carrying the one” is not numeracy.
And this is what educators do. We stay up late at night, Wondering how we could have better taught a lesson. We wonder how we can reach people, students, children. How can we inspire People to learn more, know more, achieve more.
Teachers across #abed want this for your children. It might not look the way your remember it. That’s ok. We can be visionary, we can evolve, we can and should be innovative and creative. It’s the essence of education.

Let’s not let nostalgia impede this wonderful process.
