Everyday racism in the U.S. Today a white racist chef of a restaurant, Spiros Sidorakis, twisted my arm and shoved my phone to the ground because I called their racism out in public.
I was meeting some friends in Queens, near Astoria Park, and we ordered takeout from a Greek restaurant called Agnanti (19-06 Ditmars Blvd, Queens, NY 11105). While we were waiting for our food to come outside, I wanted to use the restroom.
I asked the server who took our order where the restroom is, and he directed me to it. As I am walking in, I get stopped by another white man server who inquires why am I going in, it is only for paying customers who have a table.
After telling him that I have already paid for my food, and I am waiting for my order, he did not believe me. So I asked him that are you stopping me because I am a brown woman and look like someone crashing this place to pee?
At this moment, the man knowing I called his BS out, started arguing that I should not raise my voice. The customers who were dining in the restaurant stopped eating, were looking at me, and yes I was making a spectacle.
The racism does not stop here. Their head chef, an old white dude, comes out of the kitchen now and is pushing me with his hands. Knowing what happens with black people in this country, we know we need to take evidence of racism because no one believes people of color.
So I start taking out the phone out of my bag. The white dude asks me are you calling the cops? I am like no dude, I am just making a video, continue what you are doing. Hearing this he twists my arm and shoves the phone on the ground
The owner of the restaurant did not do anything to de-escalate the situation and literally pushes us out of the restaurant. She pivoted the whole thing on COVID-19 and argued that can't I read the sign, and do I not know there is a pandemic going on?
I am wearing my mask and keeping distance while the white woman owner is aggressively coming closer to me, to push me out of the restaurant. She calls me and my partner crazy, and declares, I am not going to serve your food, after taking our money.
We canceled our order anyway after this racist attack. The whole logic of not letting people use the restroom is anyway very problematic, I don't support that at all. One should not have to pay money to pee.
This is a larger structural problem which the governments do nothing to change. Why aren't there enough restrooms in public spaces? The white racist chef, owner, servers who thought they could subdue and humiliate me, and I will let it go, where quite deluded.
I am glad I called out their racism. @ACLUNJ I am a resident of Jersey City. Can you help me file a complaint against this restaurant? Aganti, 19-06 Ditmars Blvd, Queens, NY 11105
This is the chef of Aganti restaurant who physically assaulted me today. Brief video of the racist attack.
