Students are about to start 1st yr of their PhD programs in a few wks (in a pandemic no less), this has me thinking about starting grad school in August, 2000.
5 things I would tell my 1st yr PhD student self...
#1 - Don't work every Saturday, it's actually not worth it at all

#2 - You will struggle w/ lab work, writing (especially grant writing) and you'll barely pass comps. But people will help you out, teach you & you'll make friends that will support you. You will discover a
of science that will sustain you during some rough patches.

#3 - Think about your career goals from day one. A successful career in science takes MANY forms, explore all options and tailor your training to achieve your career goals. This will save you a lot of grief & stress of getting a job.
#4 - You don't have to put up with a**holes just because you are a student.
#5 - Enjoy being a trainee and take the time to learn as MUCH as you possibly can. You will not get an opportunity again to get this much time to devote to learning new skills and new knowledge.
Also, take ALL opportunities for free food.
