Hey look at me and my husband on the right. What a date night, eh? https://twitter.com/dannyjpeterson/status/1292279336565788673
Y’all. Hundreds and hundreds of people packed together singing songs like “its your breath in our lungs.” Angry men with no masks arguing with us at the top of their voices. This was way worse than tear gas, honestly.
They really hated Krispin’s sign
This sign made a lady scream in rage. I had to intervene because she wouldn’t leave this woman alone.
Mine also really annoyed people. A lot.
We were a small group of Christians there to represent for Black Lives Matter. There were other protestors there as well, and things got pretty heated at times between several of them and rally attendees. Several proud boys tried to intimidate us (especially Krispin).
What does it say when Proud Boys attend your Christian rally? When signs inviting repentance and lament are taken as threats? I think it says something terrifying.
Also I love my sister (this is at her house before she was downtown and masked up). Her charismatic nature and prayers against white supremacy mostly really confused people, which was great.
Almost every man who yelled at me looked like my dad. All the songs everyone was singing tonight I knew every word to. And they did it in the same spots people have been crying out for justice in for months. I’m really, really sad tonight.
Just packed in. No masks. Worshipping.
Worshipping what? What the hell does Christian unity look like in an unjust and unequal society? What do we think God’s dream for the world is? The level of dissonance I felt tonight was overwhelming.
Have you ever been in a crowd of people singing triumphalistic praise songs in the midst of a global pandemic and moment of national reckoning with racial violence and realized the god they are singing to feels like a stranger to you? Wow that’s a particular kind of lonely.
