Earlier today a tweep argued with an *expert* about the appointment of GGs. She asserted that the distinguishing between nominating for appointment and actually appointing on the advice of the PM is a matter of splitting hairs. /2 #cdnpoli
2/ Let's imagine a scenario where Canada ends up with a really problematic PM - someone like Stephen Harper's BFF Viktor Orbán. That PM then decides to nominate for appointment a really problematic GG. A neo-Nazi, for example. 3/
3/ The Queen might demur to take the PM's advice. That would be a good thing. Whereas the Americans have a real Trump problem, we at least have an added layer of protection because Canada is a constitutional monarchy. Has it been used? I don't think so. But it's there.
I hope a constitutional expert will add to or correct this if necessary.
