Did I fucking read that right?? Did she honest to god say ‘genuine refugees’? ‘GENUINE REFUGEES’??? I am LIVID https://twitter.com/pritipatel/status/1291713611212247041
The UK actually has very few asylum seekers compared to the rest of the world. Lebanon and Turkey for example, have much higher population percentages. In Europe, Germany and Greece have lots more.
If they have made it to the UK it is because they need to and are desperate. They may have worked here before, have family here, or have some other connection.
Either way, no person should be considered ‘illegal’. Illegal for just existing. Illegal for wanting to escape violence. Illegal to want to be with their families. People are not illegal.
Coming back to this because I am angry
This supposed ‘crackdown’ will do nothing to deter people from attempting to cross the border. They are desperate and will do anything to get here. It will only result in more deaths, including those of children.
Already, the UK provides France with a significant amount of money to ‘control the border’. This has only resulted in increased violence in Calais from CRS, a pseudo-police force funded by this money. They slash tents, throw tear gas and acid, and beat up refugees.
This is what controlling borders and not believing people fleeing from violence does. It only creates more violence, and dehumanising refugees is simply a means of scapegoating bigger concerns, to move focus from the government’s failures.
I have sources for all of this btw, Twitter just not the best means of referencing
You only have to search ‘CRS Calais’ online to see something about the human rights abuses they carry out. @GuiltFemPod also did a few incredibly useful podcast episodes with @chooselove volunteers a couple of years ago.
