everyone: "germany has done such a great job confronting their past and coming to terms with the nazis and the holocaust! they're an example to us all!"
germany:
they also have a bunch of rommel memorials that i'm not going to bother to post. i make fun of rommel dads but germany actively institutionalizes this
they only had to confront what they had done when everyone else forced them to and they STILL have rommel monuments (and that's not even getting into all the nazis in west germany).
austria was able to get away with the "first victims of hitler" myth until the kurt waldheim affair and he still won and a lot of people supported him because he was getting attacked. and then they kept electing super right wing governments including the FPO
and fіnlаnd sided with the nazis! but you aren't allowed to say this without someone yelling about how "actually we just fought against the soviet union, mannerheim hated hitler also the winter war" okay, and which army did you invade the ussr alongside?
the "clean horthy" myth is institutionalized in hungary and still pretty widespread outside of hungary but at least there's SOME pushback. people actively praise germany for being good at dealing with the nazis and allow fіnland to do this sort of revisionism
and obviously i rip on ukraine for their awful memory politics but at least most of their families were in the red army and not the UPA or galicia ss. if you ask germans, their opas were all forced to join but they also felt kinda bad about doing war crimes so it's okay :(
there's a really great german movie called the nasty girl that's based on a true story about a historian who decided to investigate her town's ww2 past and their tales of resistance. they were all complete lies and everyone harassed her so much she left germany altogether
and everyone knows the story of freddie and truus oversteegen and hannie schaft but after the war, the dutch goverment tried to prevent a hannie schaft commemoration because she, along with the oversteegens, were communists but the nazi collaborators never faced justice
also the west talked about kirill alexandrov as if he was a brave soul exposing uncomfortable truths about soviet collaboration with his dissertation about vlasov, but the actual issue is that he's a vlasov sympathizer and an NTS member, which historically collaborated!
the new york times wrote a straight up puff piece about a guy who runs a museum praising nazi collaborators and is angry about "russia covering up communist crimes". the actual issues are with tsarist russia and white army apologia but you think those are good anyway.
and the whole "russia covers up communist crimes" is asinine because the historical narrative is generally anticommunist and the main reason why stalin is popular is world war ii. putin was friends with solzhenitsyn but these people are still trying to reconcile that.
