During 2+2 = 4 discourse it was apparent the stereotyped sides (not corresponding to the actual distribution of opinion) were people who believe mathematical truth universal and indubitable vs people who believe mathematical truth is a matter of racist imperialist convention...
... an odd thing about this is that it misses out what seems to me the most plausible position; the truths of mathematics are conventional (and thereby in some sense relativised to culture groups), but it's just not empirically true that prevalent conventions serve imperialism...
... SJW metaphysics and IDW sociology, so to speak. I say this because, like, I have read some of the arguments which purport to show the wickedness of mathematical universals and they're mostly not very strong, and could be rejected even if the conventionalism accepted...
... of course I won't pretend that mathematical conventionalism is obviously correct or anything, but it has its virtues as a naturalistic position and I think its always going to be a bit tempting if you don't want to believe in magic stuff. Anyway, I dunno, just musings.
