A different perspective on perception from a visually impaired person (i.e. why my DMs don't have me roll with disadvantage if my character is partially blind):

moving along the perimeter & along with asking what I see, I ask what I hear/smell. I want to know if the forge I'm near smells like it was doused (wet) or burned low (dry/iron). I want to know if the murmurs I hear from the nearby building sound frantic or calm with long 2/
pauses between words. I want to know if I can hear the waves hitting the shore or if the camp noises drown it out. Can I smell food cooking? All this to discern if they are aware they are being watched, if this is just every day life for them, are they relaxed?
These are all 3/
These are all 3/
things a fully sighted person could ask as well and I don't need to *see* any of those things. This is why a well thought out approach to playing a character with a disability is not only possible but also why playing with a disability shouldn't include playing with disadvantage.
Let's get rid of using words like "fix/cure/correct" or other terms that implies a disabled character's drive is to no longer be disabled. Many of us don't see our disability as a bad thing nor do we spend our days wishing it away. Some of us see it as just a part of life.
