Is tonight going to be your first protest? Here are some tips for a good/safe time, a thread (tl/dr: be prepared):

1. Wear long-sleeved clothing. Yes, it's summer, but it'll be night, cooler, and if the cops use cs gas, and they might, you don't want that on your skin. (1/
2. Hydrate before the march. You'll be walking/marching, and if there's a police bullrush (there always is), you'll be doing cardio. (2/
3. Wear a mask. Covid19 is NOT something you want to catch. Plus masks make it harder for you to be personally identified. Plus they're very fashionable, everyone will be wearing them. (3/
4. Bring friends. Having a protest buddy keeps you safer, makes it more fun, and helps the cause.

5. Closed toed footwear. You might be running. You'll be on pavement. Think comfort and function. (4/
6. No protest policing. This can be challenging for a first-timer. While tonight is not a direct action event, it is an individual choice how to protest. If you see an action you don't agree with, don't participate. Just remember, "you didn't see anything." (5/
7. You might be surprised at how suddenly violent the police are. The aggression of the police is nightly, and usually later in the evening. It is thoughtless, ruthless, and can be scary. One thing to see it on twitter, another to experience it. Try not to panic. (6/
8. If you are concerned about police aggression, gas, or getting arrested, that's OK. Come for a while and leave when you like. Stay behind the "Walls" who are there to defend your right to protest. (7/
9. If you want to take photos or video or live stream, great! DO NOT focus on protesters faces. Keep your camera on the Police (especially their faces), or bodies/feet. Do remember, your digital and personal safety by bringing your phone is your responsibility. (8/
10. Try to keep your focus on the message. Tonight is about lack of police accountability for targeting violence and harassment at communities of color. Their current violent aggression is something the Black communities in Portland have endured for decades. (9/
11. If you plan on staying for the Cops' "let's attack the protesters because that's what we do" Hour, be prepared. Gloves. Boots. Helmet. If you can, respirator. Goggles. Not to be aggressive, quite the contrary. You gotta protect yourself from those sworn to protect you.(10/
Finally. And this is important: have fun! Listen to the speakers. Join in the chants. Make friends. Build community. You're exercising your rights and working for a better, more just, stronger and safer Portland. See you tonight!
