Thread: Trump’s expected executive orders to (among other things) extend the eviction moratorium from the CARES Act are woefully inadequate for addressing renters’ hardship. People need help paying the rent. #RentReliefNow https://www.cbpp.org/blog/trump-executive-orders-likely-wont-help-the-millions-struggling-to-pay-rent
The CARES moratorium covers less than 50% of renters & leaves millions at risk of eviction if they have past due rent or lose income in the future. Some folks may be covered by state/local bans, but many aren’t. Pausing evictions is not enough on its own. https://www.cbpp.org/research/housing/extend-cares-act-eviction-moratorium-combine-with-rental-assistance-to-promote
An eviction moratorium is only a short-term solution. People need emergency rental assistance because they still collect rent-related debt during the moratorium. It won’t get easier to pay past rent when the moratorium inevitably ends. #RentReliefNow
Without rental assistance landlords suffer too because they won’t have money to pay mortgages, property taxes, or apartment maintenance. #RentReliefNow
Also, people experiencing #homelessness, including those currently housed in hotels, need more resources for homeless service providers & rental assistance to secure a safe, stable place to live. #RentReliefNow https://www.cbpp.org/blog/boost-homelessness-funding-in-next-economic-relief-package
The executive orders (EO) are also expected to include an extension of the enhanced #unemployment benefits from the CARES Act but that’s not enough either. Many people are facing significant hardships even with those provisions. #ExtendUI #RentReliefNow https://www.cbpp.org/research/poverty-and-inequality/more-relief-needed-to-alleviate-hardship
An EO like this doesn’t come close to addressing people’s needs. Congress & the WH must continue negotiations on a comprehensive #COVIDRelief bill that includes #housing vouchers, #homelessness assistance, & emergency rental assistance. #RentReliefNow https://www.cbpp.org/research/housing/pandemic-relief-must-include-comprehensive-housing-assistance-for-people
