For the past few days I've been reflecting on something that I found to be incredibly telling about the way some of you have shown your Fatphobia and Privilege during Quarantine.
When everything first began to go on "lock down" many folks who have conventionally attractive/desired bodies started to express their anger at the fact that gyms would be closed. As time went on I took note of that "outrage" and a lot of languaged that was used to express it.
I would see tweets like "Ugh I'm gonna get fat during Quarantine". This reminded me how much privilege and classism plays into this very shallow and violent idea surrounding "fitness/health". Some of yall truly do not care about other people's over all well being.
People love to argue that fat folk make up fatphobia and that there is no such privileges for Non-Fat people. However, when the privilege to access gyms was taken away why was their such outrage? If "health/fitness" is so simple and accessible then why was there a problem?
Classism plays a huge role in Fatphobia. They go hand in hand. It's about accessibility. Who can use certain services that others cannot? Who is in proximity to those services? How much are these services? These are questions that some of yall dont have to think about.
I also found it interesting with how quickly many Non-Fat folk love to embrace their new found "thickness" and "Quarantine Weight" but will still be violently fatphobic in their day to day lives.
Something I firmly believe is that Unlearning Fatphobia is very hard work because it impacts us in ways we never considered. From eating disorders, to what type of health care we can have, and even simple access to public transportation.
I wanted to bring this up because I feel it's important to realize that if you spent these past few months whining and being "outraged" about missing the gym then you need to really check your privileges. Also seek out some real therapy and unpack your fatphobia.
