There was an article I read couple months before where nfl players rated what skill they rated from their coaches. The no 1 was ability to communicate and getting respect from players.(I am paraphrasing) The players preferred coach with people's skill than X and O(tactics). https://twitter.com/JamesHorncastle/status/1292149404158308353
I feel this is more true with soccer (or the real football) than others. We often want this coach with incredible tactics manage top clubs but they end up failing like Sarri. They mostly fail because players don't respect them. You can have all great tactics.
If you can't communicate to your players, it really doesn't matter how good of a tactian you are. The thing with former players is they are already respected when they enter. They don't need to earn respect. If they are good communicating to players, they can make team play
the way they want. Obviously, that's where it could be great if they are good tactician. It could however be rectified by having assistants with strong tactical knowledge. Especially nice if the coach is adaptive and can listen to their peers. Remember, no coach is perfect.
Every one would have weaknesses which can be covered. That's why I feel big clubs are going with a coach that would gain the locker room respect. It's not foolproof but it has a better probablity to work than some coach who is a good tactician but "My way only" coaches.
