here's some more free labour from me. a thread of things george lucas cherry-picked from Indigenous cultures to write into the mythology of star wars:
-the squash blossom hairstyle of Hopi unmarried women
-the concept of the Force (animism)
-the significance of hair braiding (1/)
alderaanians view touching hair to be extremely intimate and braiding it in different styles means different things. this is directly lifted from First Nations beliefs, in which someone's hair is an extension of their Spirit. (3/)
European writers long ago referred to indigenous Americans’ ways as “animism,” a term that means “life-ism.” And it is true that most or perhaps all Native Americans see the entire universe as being alive—that is, as having movement and an ability to act." (6/)

and yoda says in ESB: "Its energy surrounds us and binds us. Luminous beings are we, not this crude matter. You must feel the Force around you; here, between you, me, the tree, the rock, everywhere, yes. Even between the land and the ship." (7/)
a lot has been made of the parallels between Indigenous Peoples and the resistance/rebellion, fighting against a crushing colonial "empire" as well, and of ewoks directly representing us, a "primitive" people fighting to defend their lushly wooded homeland from violent (9/)
invaders. "Ewoks are named after the Miwok, a Native American tribe, indigenous to the Redwood forest in which the Endor scenes were filmed for Return of the Jedi (...)"

Indigenous peoples are the original storytellers. if you like a fantasy series, chances are it's taken its foundations from our rich mythologies. it costs nothing to look into it and acknowledge the people who inspired your faves. doing this is part of decolonization, (11/)
undoing the belief that white ppl are the original content creators of most things, when in fact they usually take from other cultures and then deny it. that said, Indigenous ppl strongly resonate with SW, because we see so much of ourselves in it.
