Experts & advocates are not being alarmist for no reason about the oncoming eviction crisis. Nearly 20 MIL households are in danger across the country. In CA there is a real chance to avoid the disaster. This is some of what #AB1436 would do and why each is important (thread).
1. Permanently establishes that tenants can't be evicted for nonpayment of rent during state of emergency and 90 days after. IMPORTANT BECAUSE as many as 2 MIL households in CA are at risk of eviction, it'd be an unmanageable crisis displacing millions of families and children
2. Gives tenant 15 months to repay rent w/o affecting credit or tenant record. IMPORTANT BECAUSE the economy is in depression and we need time and relief to recover. Eviction or unpaid rent on a record can make it near impossible for families to find decent housing for 7 YEARS
3. Allows tenants & landlords to set up repayment plans while prohibiting landlords from collecting more than what's owed. IMPORTANT BECAUSE it encourages and supports mom-and-pop landlords to recoup lost income while preventing corporate landlords from profiting off of crisis
