We’ve received some questions about how Chapel Hill Transit is going to work this Fall. Here’s a thread to give some insight into our plan. 1/10
Normally Chapel Hill Transit fits as many people as possible on a bus. We can’t pack buses anymore. A bus that fits over 40 people, now can only carry 10-15 people depending on where people sit and if they are wearing face coverings. 2/10
Normally @CHTransit uses 70 buses and around 95 operators a day to provide service on 18 routes across Chapel Hill, Carrboro and Hillsborough. 3/10
@CHTransit has reduced the number of routes running, to focus service on the areas that have the highest demand. Serving these 12 routes allows us to spread service throughout the community while freeing up vehicles and operators to supplement the routes that need it most. 4/10
The University has also adjusted class schedules and students/faculty are making decisions about how to commute to campus with their new schedules. This means we won’t know how many buses we will need and where they need to be until next week begins. 5/10
As classes begin this week, @CHTransit will have staff in key areas to help monitor potential crowds and get buses where they need to be faster. 6/10
We ask that everyone be patient as we get used to new routes, new demand for transit service and new schedules. We will learn quickly, but there may be some bumps this first week. Listen to staff and let us know about the issues you see: [email protected]. 7/10
We also know that many of our customers chose to live close to transit routes without knowing that they would be temporarily out of service. We’re sorry that we cannot provide the service you were expecting. 8/10
@CHTransit hopes to get service back to normal, but for that to happen, we need everyone to wear face coverings over their mouths and noses on our vehicles and respect physical distancing guidance. We are providing free masks on our buses for as long as our supplies last. 9/10
We love seeing everyone on our buses, but this Fall we can only have 10 people on the bus. If you are able to walk, bike, get a ride or work from home, please save that seat for someone who cannot. 10/10
