How Thatcherism killed Liverpool and why the tories are never trusted in Liverpool [A thread]
Back in the 60s, with the rise of Merseyside beat and the rise of The Beatles, Liverpool had a bustling vibe and a wonderful community
Then in the 70s Liverpool docks with traditional manufacturing industry began to decline due to Thatcherism policy’s trying to improve urbanism, this caused Liverpool docks to be obelested which caused dock workers to be thrown out of jobs, causing high unemployment
Then in the 80s, which was one of the worst years in Liverpool history, more unemployed grew and the People of Liverpool begin to get fed up. It started into protests against closing companies and then it turned into riots,
The riots happened for 9 days straight it caused hundreds of injuries and more hate for the Tory party grew. This was known as the summer Liverpool burned.
Marget thatcher and the Tory party respond to the riots was even worse, marget’s advisors believed that they shouldn’t invest into Liverpool and should be left to decline, the the result of this caused high poverty rates and mass unemployment since the Great Depression
This made the Liverpool people to began to identify themselves as scouse than English and many wanted to break away from the government that destroyed them, Liverpool began to rise again but you can easily the stains on Liverpool by Thatcherism
