Sometimes (mdzs) modern aus that are supposed to be set in China are set in a vague and ambiguous location that ultimately come across as western. So, little details can go a long way in reaffirming the fact that a story is supposed to take place in China.

The easiest and most effective detail I can think of for writers to incorporate into their writing is how people pay for things. While in the west, things like cash and etransfer are equally popular, in China, literally everything is payed for on your phone.

And so, you may be interested in looking into things like WeChat pay and Alipay, and adding certain elements of that to your story in place of characters paying for things with cash.

Of course, write what you want, I can't really stop you. But if you're aiming for/want to challenge yourself to realism, it never hurts to research into culture specific nuances.
