You know, #academia isn’t for everybody. It wasn’t for me, but I knew that going in. I got a great education, and have spent my time at small, regional universities trying to help my students do what they want to do...which is what I wanted to do. Do academics look down at me? 1
...I’m sure that a lot do. But that doesn’t matter. I value what I do, and fairly often my students value what I do. I’m a first gen college graduate who went to a small, regional university myself. I like my job. That’s what I always wanted. #nocomplaints #noregrets
...of course I am broke though...and even as a tenured associate who is up for full professor this year, I’m barely better off than term instructors. That’s the job though. I used to wait tables...work at a hotel...manage a pizza place...work at a motorcycle shop. It’s all work.
If I have to leave this job some day, I’ll find another job. I don’t know why I felt compelled to say this stuff, but I know lots of people struggle with their decision to pursue a career in “academia”...or with the decision to leave. It’s okay though...
...people are more than their job. Do what makes you happy, or fulfilled in life...not necessarily in just work. Be a good friend...or spouse...or partner...or parent...or be alone if it makes you happy. I think that’s what is most important. But, what do I know? 🤷‍♂️
