The Newcastle thing. What is the issue? A Saudi takeover presented problems for the PL. Not for moral reasons, a murdered journalist, or their human rights record; those things don’t affect the PL; They had a problem because rights are EVERYTHING and the Saudi’s pirated them.
Their paying rights holders, who’ve made the Premier League the monster it is, have had their legitimate dollar pirated by a country that then wanted to buy into the product. So, of course the PL didn’t make a decision. This is not the PL deciding to make a moral decision (cont)
It’s too late to start making moral decisions on ownership as that horse is long gone. This is the Premier League not knowing how to balance the demands of clubs & their broadcasters. So they delayed and delayed until the problem went away. Bullet dodged.
There’s no conspiracy here as far as I can see. It’s just a dilemma they couldn’t reconcile and a lot of disappointment for fans who want to see the back of Ashley and thought this takeover was the answer to the problem.
And as happens in football, no sympathy from fans of other clubs because they care only about what affects them. Had the PL refused the takeover with no explanation THEN we’d have a need for justification but the Saudis pulled out.
(There’s also the issue of a shadow director being an actual state and not a person but hey, that’s just another factor). You are welcome.
Muting Newcastle fans this afternoon (again 🙂)
Newcastle fans saying “
If the Premier League just said no we’ve just moved on” there isn’t really a chance most of you would have just ‘moved on’. Some of you would. Most not so much I suspect.
