i've posted these numbers before for the EFL but i love relative metrics (relative meaning +/- away from team average of a certain metric) I've calculated the Premier League MFs Shot creating actions from @fbref and there's some big jumps in SCAp90 vs RelSCAp90
Relative metrics are just another prism with which you can look through to try and make metrics a little more "equal" throughout the league. For example, in FBREFs MF Shot creating actions Gundogan haad 3.25p90 which is approx about 20th rank. Once you make them relative....
to each teams average and calculate how a players p90 score goes up against that team average to give a REL SCA p90, then compare against all other players REL SCA p90 Gundogan drops to Rank 85.
This is not a measure of quality of player, it's only 1 metric & of course not all players have the role of creating actions leading to shots BUT it does show value of being able to weed out those on dominant teams appearing high in rankings over less dominant teams' key players
Aaron Mooy is an example of how Relative metrics can change a perception slightly. Ranking approx 23rd for SCAp90 (still very good) his REL SCA p90 ranks him 11th. A 12 place shift. Not that anyone uses simple Z-A rankings of counting stats in a recruitment capacity but....
the ideas that relativising gives in a much larger context really does start to grow and you see the benefits of ratios, %s of totals etc. Looking at how a player performs not just in relation to league as a whole, but how they performed on their team vs the league as a whole.
