Polish politics is becoming more farcical than ever. Both sides try to provoke the other in order to discredit it, but in the eyes of a different audience. As no election is scheduled soon, the opposition has (probably temporarily) given up on the attempts to win over the
so called “symmetrists” (that is, those like myself, that see they choics offered as between covid, spanish flu, smallpox and typhus) and instead has borrowed the Democrats tactics from a Portland and Seattle - using (still fairly mild) violence to provoke arrests so they can
claim that Poland is now Belarus. This is not only ludicrous but also morally despicable and insulting to the Belorussians, who are genuinely risking their lives (as everyone is likely to see soon) but it does not matter to them as it’s all meant for the EU, which they hope will
impose sanctions on Poland (which the opposition sees as their only chance of winning the next parliamentary election). (Here I should add that I intend to not just unfollow but completely block anyone comparing Poland to Belarus, for the reasons above).
PiS (Law and Justice) is
actually happy with what is going on (especially the right wing Justice Minister Zygmunt Ziobro) because because in this way the opposition is now seen as openly supporting violence (which is having the same effect here as in the US - forcing people reluctant to support PiS and
particularly those who detest Ziobro, to chose between him and Antifa-like thugs) so they are doing nothing to defuse the situation. Moreover, the EU is now criticising the very same Polish courts that it was defending only a short time ago as the pillars of rule of law in Poland
Hence both sides are now interested in escalation believing that it works in their favour, but, as in the US, only one side can be right.
