So here’s the thing. I have friends at the CDC. Two are medical doctors. Y’all— they are HURTING.

These are people who spend their whole careers preparing for this exact scenario, did hard work all over the world, and watched the administration fumble the fucking ball. https://twitter.com/pearlriverflow/status/1291956685075107841
Y’all— especially my ATLien friends— spare a thought for your buddies and neighbors and game night friends at the CDC.

Federal agency work is about loving what you do. Nobody’s at NOAA or the Park Service to be rich.

They do it because it matters. They feel this DEEPLY.
(Well. Depends on the Agency. ATF, BP, and ICE can kick rocks and cry to their mamas.)

CDC, Interior, EPA, NOAA, Energy, Education— they’ve all seen their missions perverted. They’ve this administration.

We’re talking whole careers ending on the sourest note.
And these aren’t faceless admin-bots. I mean it when I say these are your neighbors and the other regulars at your brunch place.

Remember the bloody faces in OKC after the bombing? Those people are the people who make up a gov for and by the people.

It’s us.
Fauci’s not a demigod or a villain or comic relief in the Greek tragedy of late-stage capitalism.

He’s a doctor. A public health educator. And he’s trying to do his job. Can we please get back to the part where we stop making memes of physicians, and just trust them?
I did an extremely fun interview with @KeriLeighMerrit, where there was wine in my coffee cup and I went off about how much I freaking love the feds. Like, “Federal agencies are the fuckin tits, I love them!” And Keri Leigh’s face was like... okay?
And it *sounded* like I was shaking pompons for ICE or something— definitely didn’t get my words in order inside my head before they came out— but what I meant was that the people who plug away inputting bycatch data for northeastern fisherie for NOAA? I admire them.
The USAID folks who continue to distribute long-lasting insecticide-treated bed nets to fight malaria— a disease that has been killing humans since there have been humans— I respect them. They do what they can, at the whim of administrators, and stay focused.
What I’m asking right now is for all of us to remember that there are federal employees who aren’t brownshirts and jackboots.

They’re not always the loudest voice in the room, but they’re worth hearing. Listen to their expertise. They’re raising their families in this, too.
And as for me:
I can’t tell you how much it means to me to know that little nothing-special me has epidemiologists, physicians, statisticians, and medical historians to help me understand what we’re up against.

I hope to be a good legislator. It’ll be experts that get me there.
