That doesn’t mean he’s “our friend” or a “good guy” etc it just means that he doesn’t want things to move too fast, so that he doesn’t lose his grip on them.
Legacy politicians have to update their positions more gradually than campus radicals, so it’s to his advantage to slow down the moral outrage so that he doesn’t get outflanked by them + look like a dinosaur.
This is about self-interest and power preservation + extension / projection into the future. It’s not about restoring sanity to the system long term or sacrificing the selfish interests of his base for the ‘greater good’ or those of the Republican opposition.
He’s able to do this so openly now because JPB is burnt out + scilent, so ownership of his ideas “clean your room” “dirt yourself out before criticising other people” are in the public domain — and Obama has seized upon them and repackaged them.
As an instantly recognisable elite black progressive and legacy politician, he is the ideal mouthpiece for JBPs repackaged ideas of complexity, falabity, personal responsibility > mindkilled social justice based criticism of others / setting fire to systems you don’t understand.
