TW rape culture

This feels very much like a hunt for control.

Like 'if I behave properly, I'll be safe. If I'm perfect, I'll be safe'

I have a lot of compassion for this, bc the fact that so much of life is down to luck and oppression is arbitrary is really difficult to face https://twitter.com/stubbornsag/status/1291746580232646666

It feels like we can only control our actions. Which is true, but we also can't fully control our actions.

Our bodies require rest, our brains need to turn off

Breaking yourself on hypervigilance won't stop violent people from taking advantage of a second of weakness

It won't stop the violence. At most it just transfers it to someone less prepared

All the while it is stealing your peace, and stealing your joy
TW rape culture

And all the hypervigilance in the world won't protect you from violent systems.

I feel for Michaela. When I hear her, I hear a lot of fear and a lot of pain and a search for some measure of cosmic justice
TW rape culture

But fundamentally her words are steeped in rape culture and are deeply irresponsible and she needs to do better by rape victims

We deserve better than hypervigilance
TW rape culture

Addendum: i think that trying to reclaim power as a survivor is super important

If i understand Michaela's words correctly, that's what she's shooting for

But it's a very individual/solitary kind of power
TW rape culture

I read her words as taking rape/rapists as a fact of life, like the seasons

Watching your drink for roofies is akin to making sure you take an umbrella

Just something you have to do
TW rape culture

But i think the power of feminism is in understanding that rape is not some unchangeable reality

That rape happens because rapists exist, are encouraged and empowered to operate without consequence
TW rape culture

Feminism works to remove power from rapists, to disincentivise rape, to make sure the act carries material/emotional/communal consequences for the rapist

It gives victims the power to say "never again because collectively we will stop you"
TW rape culture

Personally i find that much more impactful and (as much as I hate the word) empowering
