Someone on r/LabourUk is lying about Gower in 2017. I’ve been the CLP campaign coordinator since 2016 & this is absolute bullshit.

We were given national spend print & organisers. We knocked doors & phone canvassed every day, leafletted, & ran a targeted social media campaign.
“Even funding for flyers came through far too late”

This must’ve been the print that had we left over from Martin Catons 2010 re-election campaign 🙄
“We got nothing”

Apart from several visits from high profile Shadow Cabinet Members, Welsh Government ministers, and Carwyn...
“I don’t remember any organisation”

Because you didn’t do any of it. A ground campaign or a committee room doesn’t just spontaneously appear.
The reality is on day 1 of the campaign we were hopeful but national polling was heavily against us. We were the most marginal seat in the country but talk was focussed on keeping what seats we had.

Regardless, we went out & got the Voter ID needed to show Gower was winnable.
Within 2 weeks the polls were moving & we had the ground data to corroborate.

✅ Welsh Labour backed us

✅ National Labour backed us

✅ Momentum’s my nearest marginal directed activists to us.

Within weeks we went from being a long shot to eminently winnable.
As a CLP we we made the case that we were winnable and we were completely backed by the party with visits, national spend print, organisational help, what we needed to push our ground campaign into another gear

As much as I’d like to think we did it on our own, we didn’t 😅
I can only speak from my experience in Gower, which at the time was the most marginal seat in the country. I don’t know if winnable key marginals were deprived of resources, but the reality is we weren’t.

Anyone can post anonymous bollocks online. Don’t believe the nonsense.
