3/n Let’s start with a carnatic movie song. What a 100th movie for Rajinikanth; must have been a shock for his 80s fans. Raama Naamam Oru Vedhame, in the golden voice of KJ Yesudoss. First couple of lines may remind you of the geetham ‘Sri GanaNaatha’.
4/n Moving to a folksy tune in this raagam. Shenbagame (Sindhubhairavi) and this are two unparalleled gems from this album. Penned by Gangai Amaran, மதுர.. மரிக்கொழுந்து வாசம்
5/n DYK this movie was originally planned with Rajinikanth? Based on Vaidehi Kaathirundhaal's success, Vijayakanth played lead & the movie went on to become a blockbuster. Beautiful melody in the Raja - Amaran combo, sung by the underrated Jayachandran.
6/n This one, in Amaran’s music (his sixth movie as a music director) and Vaali’s lyrics is another gem of a melody in this raagam. ஒரு மோகம், ஒரு தாகம், இங்கு உன்னாலே இன்னேரம் உண்டானது!
7/n There is Inji Idupazhagi, Potripaadadi Ponne, Vaanam Thottu Pona, and Saandhu Pottu. And then there is the largely not noticed short song, beautifully composed in Mayamalavagowlai in Thevar Magan. நீலியென சூலியெனத் தமிழ் மறை தொழும் மாசறு பொன்னே வருக!
8/n A Raja Special in SPB and Chithra’s lovely voices. Love this song for the transitions between the singers! இதம் தரும் காதல் கவிதைகள் படித்திடும் நேரம்..
9/n You know an album is legendary, when choosing one favorite song is difficult. Ithu Oru Ponmaalai Pozhuthu, Madai Thiranthu (both in SPB’s voices), and then this! Can you guess the singers of this melody?
10/n There aren’t many peppy numbers in this raagam, so we got to go all the way to 1956 to find one.
11/n Closing this thread with the only ARR song that I know in this raagam. Was pleasantly surprised to see the comment ‘2020 luyum kekiravanga like pannunga’ liked 195 times :)
