So the massacre in MazarÂi-Sharif was aimed primarily against ethnic Hazaras. The new Taliban governor, Manon Niazi, gave many anti-Hazara speeches around Mazar-i-Sharif, some of which were broadcast over the radio, in the days following August 8.
In his speeches, Manon Niazi threatened the Hazaras with violence for being predominantly Shia Muslims and for their part in defending the city of Mazar. He also promised to unleash violence against Hazaras in other parts of Afghanistan.
In the following days, Taliban searched house to house for men and boys, particularly of #Hazara ethnic. After massacring at least 8000 Hazaras in Mazar-i-Sharif, the Taliban followed-up their compaign of eradicating Hazaras in the Dar-e-Suf(Samangan) and other parts of Hazarajat. Particulalry, the sept 13th 1998 massacre of Yakawlang (Bamiyan) is well documented.
